CCJDS Hosts East Bay Jewish Middle School Dance

On Sunday night March 2nd, as the rest of Lafayette was rolling up the sidewalks, Temple Isaiah's social hall looked like a Knesset, a conference, an important gathering of Jews from all over. Yet these were teenagers! An auspicious occasion?

What brought these young people together? The historic second East Bay Jewish Middle School Dance, brainchild of and sponsored by the Contra Costa Jewish Day School.

Grooving tunes, ambient lighting, conversation pits and kosher snacks delivered just the right atmosphere for the kids’ satisfaction. The parents were satisfied as well – the kids had a safe place to have fun and meet other Jewish middle school kids. In most communities, the mixing usually begins in high school and CCJDS thought why not get them mixing earlier.

Why a Knesset? There were teens from at least five synagogues and two day schools as well as the general community.  Over 100 teenagers shimmied, popped, and macarena'd the night away. As was fitting, the Jewish community price on entry included cans of food that are bound for the Contra Costa Food Bank - a few hundred pounds worth.

It was a good time for all.
