Minorities Friendship Project between local Jewish Day School and Catholic School
Lafayette, CA (January 31, 2008) - Building on a successful joint school collaboration project last year commemorating the lives and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, a friend and ardent supporter of Dr. King and the civil rights movement in the 1960’s, the Contra Costa Jewish Day School of Lafayette, CA, has joined with the St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic School of Oakland, CA, for another joint project.
This winter, the Middle School of the CCJDS and the 7th grade of St. Lawrence engaged in parallel research projects into the experiences of minority groups in the United States, such as African-, Asian-, and Hispanic-Americans. During joint school visits, the students created joint art projects – posters depicting both positive and negative experiences of these groups. These posters were presented by the students themselves at Cody’s Bookstore on Fourth Street in Berkeley on MLK Day, January 21, 2008.
Building on a successful collaborative working relationship, both Rabbi Daniel Kohn and Mr. Lou Richie, the coordinators of this project, agree that the purpose is not only to learn about the experience of minorities in the U.S., but to continue the vision of MLK by promoting interracial dialogue and friendship. Last year, Mr. Richie, commented that “if only one student from each of our schools remains in contact with each other after this project, it will have been a success.” This year, the students have enjoyed their reunion and have continued their friendships with social events outside of the school project.
